Used pallets can be heat treated in a kiln to meet ISPM 15 requirements, stamped and certified as part of the ISPM 15 heat treatment process.
What is ISPM 15 and why do I need it?
ISPM 15 (International Standards For Phytosanitary Protection) is a global passport for wooden packaging and is needed to export goods to nations participating in the ISPM 15 scheme. ISPM 15 involves heat treating wooden packaging materials, such as pallets, with a material thickness greater than 6mm.
Its main purpose is to prevent the international transport and spread of disease and insects that could negatively affect plants or ecosystems. ISPM 15 affects all wood packagng materials (such as pallets and crates) that need to be debarked and then heat treated or fumigated and stamped with a mark of compliance. Products exempt from the ISPM 15 are made from alternative material, like paper, plastic or wood panel products (i.e. hardboard, and plywood).
